Diffusion Coefficient Calculator

Diffusion Coefficient Calculator

Diffusion Coefficient Ratio (r₂): –

How to Use This Calculator

Enter the diffusion rate and molar mass of the first gas (r₁ and M₁), and the molar mass of the second gas (M₂). The tool auto-calculates the rate of diffusion of the second gas (r₂) using Graham's Law.

What This Calculator Is For

This calculator estimates the diffusion rate of one gas relative to another, based on their molar masses. It's widely used in chemistry and environmental science to study gas behaviors.

Formula Used

Graham's Law:
\( \frac{r_1}{r_2} = \sqrt{\frac{M_2}{M_1}} \)
Rearranged to find \( r_2 \):
\( r_2 = \frac{r_1}{\sqrt{M_2 / M_1}} \)

Example Calculation

If the rate of diffusion of hydrogen gas (r₁) is 10 mol/s and its molar mass (M₁) is 2 g/mol, and we want to find the diffusion rate of oxygen gas (M₂ = 32 g/mol):
\( r_2 = \frac{10}{\sqrt{32/2}} = \frac{10}{4} = 2.5 \text{ mol/s} \)
