What Is This Calculator Used For?

This calculator is used to determine the saponification value of fats and oils, which is the amount of KOH required to saponify one gram of fat. It is important in the soap-making and cosmetic industries to evaluate the average molecular weight (or chain length) of all the fatty acids present.

Formula

Saponification Value (mg KOH/g) = (V × C × 56.1 × 1000) / m

• V = Volume of KOH used (in L)
• C = Concentration of KOH (mol/L)
• 56.1 = Molar mass of KOH (g/mol)
• m = Mass of fat sample (g)

Example

If 15 mL of 0.5 mol/L KOH is used to saponify 2.5 g of fat:

Saponification Value = (0.015 × 0.5 × 56.1 × 1000) / 2.5 = 168.3 mg KOH/g
