About Electronegativity
Electronegativity is a measure of an atom's ability to attract shared electrons in a chemical bond. The electronegativity difference between two atoms helps predict the type of bond that will form between them.
How to Use This Calculator
- Select the first element from the dropdown menu
- Select the second element from the dropdown menu
- Click "Calculate Difference" to see the result
- The calculator will show the electronegativity difference and bond type
Electronegativity Formula
The electronegativity difference (ΔEN) is calculated using:
ΔEN = |EN1 - EN2|
Where EN1 and EN2 are the electronegativity values of the two elements.
Bond Type Interpretation
- 0.0 - 0.4: Nonpolar covalent bond
- 0.4 - 1.7: Polar covalent bond
- Above 1.7: Ionic bond
